Some Snow/Sleet, and Freezing Rain Later Tonight into Sunday AM, Turning Windy and Very Cold Sunday Night and Monday.

My Call: For Late Saturday Night into Sunday
Issued Saturday 12/20/08
Time: 12:00 PM

Discussion:

Another Close call for PHL and The Delaware Valley, with some Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain, and Rain on the way for Later tonight into Sunday morning. Areas further North and West will once again feel more impact of frozen precip, with this quick moving storm.

A weak storm system now over the Midwest will move east today and tonight, as it transfers some of it's energy near the Northern Mid-Atlantic coast tonight and Sunday morning. Precipitation will breakout over The Tennessee Valley later today, and move NE tonight into VA and The Delaware Valley region overnight.

Temperatures will be cold enough that the precip, starts out as some snow and sleet for much of the Delaware Valley, including interior Southern NJ, Northern DE, and NE MD. My best estimate for the start of this snow and sleet, is between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM south of PHL, and towards daybreak further north and east. Temps tonight will be near 30 for PHL and south and in the mid to upper 20's North and West of PHL. Snow, Sleet, and some Freezing rain will change to rain rather quickly by mid morning, south of PHL, but some light accumulations of a Coating to 1" are likely in these areas before changing to rain and ending by early afternoon on Sunday.

For PHL and areas North and West:
The frozen precip holds on longer before changing to a mix and some rain and freezing rain before ending. I expect a general 1" to 2" in these areas.

For the Lehigh Valley and into parts of Northern NJ, 2" to 4" amounts can be expected, with snow and some Ice. NW NJ mountains into the Poconos and NE PA, mainly snow with 4" to 8" in these areas.

NYC Metro area, and parts of NE NJ: A general 1" to 2" of snow and Sleet, before changing to rain.

Our storm system transfers to the coast, and wraps up Sunday night. Behind this storm a shot of Very Cold air follows, along with windy conditions, for Sunday night and Monday. Some flurries and snow showers are possible Sunday Night for the PHL and the NYC areas, with little or no additional accumulations. Temps fall to the teens and low 20's by Monday morning with increasing winds. Monday will be very cold with Highs 25 to 30 and winds of 15 to 30 MPH with some higher gusts, a few flurries possible in the morning.

PHL/Interior SJ/Northern DE/East Central NJ:
A Coating to 1"

N & W Suburbs of PHL:
1" to 2"

NYC/TTN/Central NJ:
1" to 2"

RDG/ABE/Parts of Northern NJ:
2" to 4"

The Poconos/Far NE PA/NW NJ:
4" to 8"

Take Care,
Ruggie
